What’s Your Impression?

Life is never as it seems. Evil hides in beautiful people and charitable acts. Goodness can hide behind an ugly facade. It takes from one-tenth of a second to seven seconds to make a first impression depending on which psychological report you read. One report says, most people’s first impressions are accurate. Other research suggests we make first impressions on limited and misleading information. First impressions last for months and have negative effects on the judge and the judged.
My book, America: Civil War II is set in the eighteenth year of the second civil war. The war started because people chose religious, political and social indoctrination that separated people into categories over getting to know people better. The country fell apart. The economy fell apart. Climate change was never addressed. America fell on its own sword.
On the surface, Scheherazade is a confident, successful woman. She’s the top surgeon in the war and climate ravaged shell of what was once Manhattan. But is she? She clings to her family and one close friend. It’s hard to find support when your circle is that small. She, like the country falls.
Scher’s suffers due to false impressions accumulated by indoctrination of prejudice and hate. She’s successful, Iranian-American immigrant, well-educated, and snobbish. Yet, at her core she is a sweet woman with a kind heart. She cares about her patients. She has many good qualities that few take notice of because she’s seen only as conceited and a talented doctor.
The world would be a better place if people stopped concerning themselves with first impressions. One of the driving devices in my story is how often a first impression is not what it seems. We as people can achieve more and do more, if we take the time to build relationships. Basing our most important decisions on snapshot impressions can lead to destructive actions.
