Each year, college baseball programs compete in the College World Series. The 2017 trophy was won by the Florida Gators, which earned its first national championship in its 11th College World Series appearance by defeating Louisiana State University (LSU) 6–1 in the championship game. Florida previously reached the championship game in the 2011 College World Series, coming up short in that contest against the University of South Carolina.
The nation’s top 64 teams participate in the College World Series, which begins with 16 pools of four teams in which only one advances to the next round. In 2017, the Gators finished first in its pool, which also included South Florida, Bethune-Cookman, and Marist College. The team then defeated Wake Forest in a best-of-three series to reach the second of two final-four brackets, in which it emerged victorious over TCU, Louisville, and Texas A&M. Against LSU, the Gators held on to a 2–1 lead until the bottom of the eighth, when it padded its lead with a four-run inning to secure its first ever national championship.
