The Laettner over Shaq decision certainly looks like an obvious mistake now, but at the time including him over Shaq (if they were going to include a college guy), seemed like a fairly reasonable decision too. Duke played LSU in Feb. 1992 and Laettner dominated Shaq, going 10–16 for 24 pts and 11 rebounds, while holding Shaq to 6–9, 15 pts. Laettner won the Naismith Award that year, a national championship, and easily won the head-to-head matchup against Shaq. Shaq of course went on to be one of the best ever, but at the time Laettner deserved inclusion over him.
