Packaged water, natural aquifer water, volcanic water, spring water, mountain water, river water — all of these are fancy ways in which water brands try to distinguish themselves.

According to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), there are only two categories of water: Natural Mineral Water and Packaged Drinking Water.

Natural mineral water is:

1) Obtained from underground sources (naturally, or through a borewell)

2) Fairly consistent composition of minerals

3) Subject to treatments which do not alter the composition of minerals in the water

This means that natural mineral water cannot be passed through an active carbon filter, or reverse osmosis.

All other types of water are classified as packaged drinking water. Some packaged drinking water brands infuse minerals into the water, and use the tag-line “with added minerals”, but BIS still classifies them as packaged drinking water.

Here are some common brands with their BIS classification:

1) Bisleri: Packaged Drinking Water with Potassium and Magnesium

2) Kinley: Packaged Drinking Water with Sodium and Magnesium

3) Aquafina: Packaged Drinking Water with no added minerals

4) Mulshi: Natural Mineral Water

5) Aava: Natural Mineral Water

6) Qua: Natural Mineral Water
