Riders Reflections, part six: Our final farewell
Today marks the final entry in a six-part series looking back at the year that was in 2017. Today, we share some final thoughts on the season.
At long last, we’ve finished chapter 140 in this five-month-long story. It really is crazy how quickly it all went by. It seems like just yesterday that Connor Sadzeck threw the season’s first pitch on April 6 against Springfield.
Unfortunately, this is where the adventure ends, as the Riders came up short in their bid for a postseason berth. That said, both of us will remember the 2017 RoughRiders for a long time.
On the field, there were a lot of prospects headlining the roster, such as Jose Trevino, Yohander Mendez and Connor Sadzeck. Those guys all delivered but one of the neat parts of this season was watching the rise of guys who weren’t necessarily expected to thrive like they did.
Isiah Kiner-Falefa had a resurgent year, logging seven new career-highs, highlighted by the first five homers of his career. Tyler Davis, who came to Frisco with a 7.29 ERA, became one of the biggest success stories of the year with 12 magnificent starts. Ricardo Rodriguez came out of nowhere and vaulted from Advanced-A Down East to the big leagues. The list goes on and on.
Off the field, this was a very enjoyable group to work with. Right from the minute we met some of these guys at Spring Training, we knew this would be a fun gang of guys. Whether this team was on a four-game winning streak or a four-game losing streak, the guys came to the park every day with a smile on their face ready to get to work.
There are plenty of people to thank for making this season a fun one, both in and out of the clubhouse. For all those folks, we express our sincerest gratitude.
April will be here soon enough. We look forward to regathering then as we begin another five-month journey through summer together.
