We need to stop being Materialistic, wealth is not everything!

It is no longer news that an actor that was on the Cosby show Geoffery Owens was found working at a regular shop. What has however followed has showed a glimmer of hope, that all is not lost and somehow we would someday recognize that wealth is not synonymous with a fulfilled and happy life.

The truth is being wealthy not a bad thing. It has however, become common place for comments like oh he is richer than you in an conversation about a person’s work that you wonder if having money suddenly makes you immune from criticisms. In Nigeria, the celebration of wealth, is sometimes nauseating especially when it comes from religious leaders. It is almost as if the singular reason Jesus died was so that we would become rich, that sometimes our sermons are full of it and the quest and greed for wealth becomes the driving force of a christian which strangely should not be the case. The bible warns about having an affinity for things, to be driven by greed rather than contentment which is great gain.

As I scrolled through social media I was glad that people spoke up for Jeffery, because whatever work his hands have found it is honorable, and he should not be shamed for that. We talk a lot about corruption, but we seem silent about greed which has slowly perm anted our society. Is it wrong to desire wealth absolutely not, but when greed is the driving force it becomes a problem.

Whatever work a person finds to do as long as it is honest, and legal they should not be shamed or made to feel less.
