This is why we can’t have nice things: “The Witch” and horror fandom’s gatekeepers
Jason Coffman

Horror is a genre deeply lacking originality on the director’s part, coupled with a sort of “learned” low expectation. The jump scare is the epitome of horror these days, gore too, usually cheaply done gore. Then follows trope after repetitive trope. Horror is a genre one can count the good movies recently made on the fingers of one hand.

Let me see…Absentia, The Innkeepers, It Follows, Babadook, The Witch.

Very few horror movie directors bother with the original, the authentic. What can I say, the “trained” horror movie fans will hate this film. Maybe the “scary little girl” was missing, there wasn’t enough gore, there should have been more cheap looking CGI ghosts perhaps, where are the zombies ?
