Ubisoft’s continued investment in blockchain technology and NFTs signals a persistent belief in the potential of decentralized gaming

Ubisoft, the renowned French video game publisher, remains committed to its blockchain ambitions. Despite the mixed reception to its initial foray into NFTs with the ‘Quartz’ platform in 2022, the company is not backing down. Recently, Ubisoft has teamed up with Double Jump Tokyo, a Japanese web3 studio, to enhance the web3 integration of its upcoming multiplayer RPG, Champions Tactics.

Expanding Blockchain Ventures

Ubisoft has been relatively quiet about its blockchain projects since the debut of Quartz. However, the company is steadily advancing its plans. Last November, Ubisoft partnered with Immutable to develop a new blockchain-based title. Now, the collaboration with Double Jump Tokyo marks another significant step in its web3 journey, aiming to accelerate global adoption of web3 games.

According to a press release from Double Jump Tokyo, Ubisoft has enlisted the studio’s expertise to support the web3 integration for Champions Tactics and to serve as a key marketing partner in Asia. The initial initiative involves integrating Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles with the Oasys Layer 2 HOME Verse blockchain, which Double Jump Tokyo developed and operates.

Champions Tactics NFTs

This partnership will enable Ubisoft to issue new NFTs for Champions Tactics, featuring unique profile pictures available on the HOME Verse chain. Prior to the game’s launch, Ubisoft has already minted 9,999 ‘Warlord’ NFTs. These NFTs, which were free to claim with a transaction fee for minting on the Ethereum blockchain, provide owners with exclusive early access to an upcoming mint of in-game playable figurines called Champions.

“A Warlord is a unique digital collectible that serves as both a unique profile picture (PFP) in-game and gives you exclusive early access to the upcoming mint of the in-game playable figurines called Champions,” explains an FAQ on Ubisoft’s latest NFT initiative.

Vision for the Future

Didier Genevois, Ubisoft’s web3 technical director, believes that integrating NFTs into Champions Tactics will elevate the gaming experience. “Teaming up with Double Jump Tokyo has been exciting because they bring not just technical skills but also a shared passion for the future of gaming,” he said. “We think this partnership will offer valuable insights on how decentralized technology can mix with gaming. Together, we look forward to delivering high-quality, entertaining gameplay that harnesses blockchain technology.”

Looking Ahead

Champions Tactics is slated for release in 2024, and with the year already half over, anticipation is building for its imminent arrival. Ubisoft’s continued investment in blockchain technology and NFTs signals a persistent belief in the potential of decentralized gaming.
