Boxing and MMA are facing off this weekend in the highly anticipated matchup of WBC and lineal heavyweight boxing world champion Tyson “The Gypsy King” Fury against lineal MMA heavyweight world champion Francis Ngannou. Presented by Top Rank, the combat sports crossover event will take place Saturday (Oct. 28) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
One of the biggest events of the year, quite literally, is set to kick off this weekend. A dream matchup of top heavyweights in boxing and MMA is set to go down in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on Saturday night when WBC and lineal heavyweight champion Tyson Fury squares off with former UFC and lineal heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou. The two will meet inside the boxing ring as the latest in the crossover genre.

Your mileage will vary on crossover fights, but there is no denying the spectacle of Fury vs. Ngannou. The fight — dubbed “Rumble in Riyadh” — features two of the best heavyweights of their time in their respective sports. The painfully overdue Fury vs. Oleksandr Usyk fight has damaged Fury’s brand, but the former unified heavyweight boxing champ is a generational talent.
“What will be will be though,” Fury told CBS Sports this week. “I’m not worried about Usyk at all. Usyk, to me, I’m not interested at all. At this present moment in my time in life, I’m only interested in Ngannou. So if I get a massive cut 27 inches across the eyebrow and I get an injured right hand and two broken ribs in victory, then that’s what I’ll do. I’m not too concerned about Usyk at all. All my focus and energy is going into fighting Francis and I’ve given it an unbelievable preparation.”
The 37-year-old has come from working in a sand quarry in Cameroon as a 12-year-old to the very pinnacle of combat sports, becoming UFC heavyweight champion with 16 stoppages in 17 wins.
Now Ngannou is preparing for his boxing debut, taking on undefeated heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury in Saudi Arabia on Saturday.
“Boxing was my first love ever since I can remember,” Ngannou said. But how did the MMA star manage to become one half of one of the biggest crossover fights in history?
To many boxing fans, he is a completely new face with an unknown backstory. But for Ngannou, this fight is just another step on a remarkable journey.

If you need any concrete proof that Tyson Fury isn’t sweating this matchup look no further than his calendar. He has a tentative December 23 date set for a title fight against Oleksandr Usyk that will also take place in Riyadh.
So what’s the purpose of fighting a former UFC champion with no boxing experience just months before a legitimate championship fight? Money, is of course the answer, but this is theoretically an opportunity for Fury to elevate his stock and awareness with a new audience.
If he’s able to put on a show and win convincingly over Ngannou he could add more fans and generate more excitement for his upcoming bout with Usyk. Conversely, a poor showing here could point toward real trouble for the champion come December.
