Nirvana Achieved? Kurt Cobain and Drug Abuse

Kurt Cobain is the face of the the grunge music of the 1990s because of his Nirvana fame. Rolling Stone even labeled him as “the spokesman of a generation.” Although he had fame, Cobain had been struggling for a long time with stomach pains and depression and had turned to heroin and opiates to self-medicate.

What started with recreational marijuana use, Cobain lated turned to heroine and prescription pain-killers in the mid-1980s to combat an undiagnosed chronic stomach condition. What started as an a way to cope with pain quickly became an addiction.

During certain shows and celebrity appearances, Cobain would either pass out or overdose. At one point he was so tired after coming down from his high that he fell asleep multiple time during a photoshoot. He actually overdosed the same day he and Nirvana would perform in New York. Whether through another dose of heroin or some other drug, he still performed later that night.

Nirvana’s lead singer finally checked into a drug rehab facility in 1992. Although he remained sober for a small while, withdrawal symptoms were picking up the destruction where drug abuse had left it.

In 1994, Cobain returned to drug abuse, but checked into another drug rehab facility. He ultimately escaped from the facility by lying to the staff and then returning to his home, where authorities say he killed himself.

Sadly, the drug rehab treatment that he received in California was not enough to help Cobain recover from the mental and physical pain he experienced during his life. Hopefully, Cobain’s story can teach all to love others, no matter the circumstances, and do whatever it takes to help those addicted to drugs gain sobriety.
