Payton Wilson Selects Carolina

Last Tuesday the Heels landed ATH Dyami Brown, a 4-star in-state prospect. On Monday, they added another 4-star in-state prospect to the 2018 class. Payton Wilson, the № 2 OLB in the country and № 85 prospect overall, committed to the Heels this morning in front of his high school. The Heels land Wilson over Clemson, Ohio State and Virginia Tech, keeping another huge prospect at home.

Wilson, a rising senior at Orange High School in Hillsborough, NC, is a multi-sport athlete, who also plays lacrosse. On the football field, Wilson has put up some great numbers. In his first two varsity seasons, he has totaled 163 total tackles. 49.0 of those tackles have been for a loss. That is spectacular. Last year alone, Wilson had 127 tackles and an insane 39.0 tackles for a loss, 13.0 of which were sacks. Wilson also had a big year on the offensive side of the ball. Orange is a very run heavy offense, and Wilson was a big part of that. Wilson ran for 756 yards and 6 touchdowns on just 84 carries last season. Not to mention, he was a dangerous receiving threat. Although he only had 13 receptions, Wilson averaged 23.5 yards a receptions and four of his 13 catches went for touchdowns. Despite those great offensive numbers, Wilson’s future is definitely at linebacker.

This is the second big commitment in a week for the Heels. Wilson is the highest rated recruit for the Heels since Jalen Dalton in the 2015 class. With the commitment, the Heels class that was 64th nationally last Monday has moved up to 44th nationally. The Heels have also gone from 12th in the ACC to 9th in that time span. Carolina is on a bit of a hot streak and they will hope to keep building on it going forward.
