buildOn GE’s network
On August 13, fourteen DTLPs from the US and Brazil traveled to Malawi with the non-profit, buildOn, to start the construction of a school that will be completed by October 2016. When completed, this school will be the most predominant structure within the Chiundira village in rural Kusungu. Children aged 5 and 6 previously walked 3–4 miles in order to get to school every morning or sat under straw coverings that barely protected them from the elements. These kids will have the opportunity to learn, and, because of solar powered lights that will be installed in the school, an evening adult literacy program will allow their parents to learn alongside them as the village grows together. What’s even more incredible- if the school upholds the 50% girl/boy ratio and stays on track, a second school will be built in the same village, compounding the effects of the change.
The DTLP Trek was more than building a school, it was an experience that forced us outside our comfort zones and immersed us in the culture of our host families. We spent the week working, dancing, laughing, and understanding the impact that this school will have on the villages’ future. It is only through education and empowerment that a community can grow, and have ownership of their future. By teaching the children to read and write, they have access to the opportunities and knowledge that will guide them to determine the direction and possibilities for their own community.
All the DTLPs on trek would agree that one of the biggest takeaways was the selflessness of the village. We were surrounded by people who always placed the needs of the community above the individual. It was about “we” not “I”. This is a takeaway that has the power to transcend our time in Malawi. The sense of community and bringing together our network is something that each of us can foster in our workplaces. This experience paired well with the collaborative culture that our GE leaders are trying to shape through messages of reuse and communication across all businesses as One GE.

As DTLPs, we know that the power of the network exists, because we experienced it during the process of fundraising for our trek cross-business and region. While only 14 DTLPs traveled to Malawi, we represented all of the individuals in our lives and at GE who donated, emailed, volunteered, and supported us to reach our goal. We were so inspired by our GE wide silent auction that raised over $20,000. Together, we all enabled a community to build a school which will create a lasting impact far beyond our week spent in the village. Upon our return, we’ve all been shocked at how people have responded to the experience, asking how they can start their own trek. If even one person follows through, another village will be forever changed.
The DTLP buildOn Malawi trek would like to thank every person who donated, who supported our trek, or who sent out an email on our behalf. Your time and money went towards something truly worthwhile. Thank you for showing us the power of the network. One person CAN make a difference.
