Introducing the Wild Irish and the person behind
Q1.: Hello Jackie! You are the founder of The Wild Irish Natural Seaweed Skincare. Would you please talk a little bit about yourself?
I am a massage therapist who fell in love with natural skincare along the way. The sensitivities, varying skin types and reactions of my clients aroused my curiosity as to what I was actually putting on their skin and there began a massive (and expensive!) learning curve into natural skincare. I obtained a Diploma in Natural Skincare Formulating and have carried on studying with Formula Botanica, one of the best decisions I ever made. The choice to use organic was obvious. Not just for the planet but simply because the less processing involved in formulating mean more of the beneficial components of the oils remain. With a captive audience (quite literally!) on which to test my products and tweak my recipes according to their feedback, I developed a range I’m very proud of. I have used my skin products on thousands of clients over the years. My aim initially was to add genuine skin benefits to each massage along with the massage experience without the use of synthetic ingredients. Demand for take home products encouraged me to expand my range to soaps, lotions, butters and face masks. My shop reflects the favourite products of my clinic patients. I incorporate seaweed into all my products.
Q2.: Why are your products unique?
No Water Preservative Free Natural & Organic Seaweed Skincare/Massage & Soap Products.
I Like to keep my skincare products simple. When I’m cooking I will buy a beautiful piece of wild salmon, sprinkle it with salt and lemon and it’s done. Why mess with beautiful ingredients. Truly Natural Beauty Products with Natural High Performance Ingredients do not contain water, fillers or fragrance oils which may potentially cause irritation to the skin. Without water, artificial preservatives are not necessary. The shelf life of the product depends on the shelf life of the oils and butter, just as nature intended. My soaps and skincare have just received Vegan Certification. I am also a member of the Guild of Craft Soap & Toiletry Makers.
The Wild Irish Skincare products nourish, protect, regenerate, detox and offer anti aging properties.
My seaweed is hand farmed on the coast of west Clare in Ireland and infused in my oils.
I take great care to ensure my skin products remain as close to nature as possible. The less processing involved in the raw ingredients, the more precious antioxidants and nutrients remain to nourish the skin. I like my oils cold pressed, extracted without heat or chemical solvents. Cold pressed oils retain the aroma, flavour & antioxidants. The more processing, the lower the quality and the cheaper the price. There is no compromise on quality of ingredients even if this cannot always be reflected on labels due to EU labelling restrictions regarding claims for skincare products.
The Wild Irish Soaps & Skincare have been independently tested by an approved Cosmetic Chemist and are compliant to EU Regulations.
Q3.: What’s your favourite ingredient?
My Hero Ingredient is Seaweed. I use it in every one of my soaps, massage and skincare products.
My 2nd hero ingredient is sea buckthorn oil. It is a beautiful rich wonder oil needed in only small amounts to provide mature/dry skin with an abundance of antioxidants, regenerative, nourishing and restorative actions. It can help reduce skin roughness, depth of wrinkles and length of facial lines.
Q4.: Tell me more about seaweed!
Unfortunately, as we age, skin begins to lose its elasticity. The loss of elastin combined with gravity and the natural slackening of facial muscles, all contribute to sagging, droopy, wrinkled skin. The resulting decrease in elastin physically changes the skin’s structure, leaving it weaker. Aging skin loses Elastin at the rate of about one percent each year, even faster when exposed to constant sunlight.
Not all bad news however.
Recent studies show that algae extract is rich in a compound called Alguronic Acid, shown to increase cell regeneration and the synthesis of elastin. It is a powerful anti-wrinkle active which strongly stimulates production of structural skin proteins. Tests showed the capacity to stimulate cellular proliferation which significantly increased collagen synthesis by 19.3% using a 2% concentration in only 24 hours compared to an untreated control sample. Even when used at 0.5% there is a gradual increase in collagen synthesis of 17% after 72 hours compared to untreated samples.
Algae, commonly referred to as “seaweed,” also conditions, hydrates, softens and detoxifies the skin, all while replenishing essential vitamins and minerals. Being rich in antioxidants, algae also helps to protect skin against free radical damage and prevents the formation of an enzyme that causes the deprivation of collagen.
Seaweed is a very powerful natural ingredient. It draws an extraordinary wealth of mineral elements from the sea that can account for up to 36% of its dry mass. These include sodium, calcium, magnesium, potassium, chlorine, sulphur and phosphorus; the micronutrients include iodine, iron, zinc, copper, selenium, molybdenum, fluoride, manganese, boron, nickel and cobalt.
Recently, seaweed has also emerged as a potent antioxidant. Especially rich in omega 3 and sterols it is soothing, anti-inflammatory and offers some protection from UVB rays. It has proved to be effective in blends for scars, burns and damaged skin. Some clinics are even using Marine Algae extract in preparation for surgery as it helps the skin recover post operatively. Beauty clinics are using it to restore the skin after deep peels and laser resurfacing.
Some algae even contain a bacterial that stimulates skin cell movement and production and is proven to be more abundant in proteins and minerals than a mother’s milk. Algae is also full of enzymes, chlorophyll, amino acids, nucleic acids, fatty acids, and DHA. Amino acids in algae firm and renew tissue while the fatty acids fight against inflammation, leaving the skin even, soft and supple. Due to the algae’s nutritious, soft cell wall, all of these nutrients are easily transferable to the skin proven to hydrate the delicate skin around the eyes as well as provide an immediate smoothing and tightening effect, reducing fine lines and wrinkles collagen and skin tone and texture.
All my soap bars and body butters contain seaweed infused oils, a mixture of red, brown and green algae to maximise the different benefits from the various types of seaweed we have available to us naturally. Just as an afterthought! None of them smell like seaweed!!
Q5.: Which product would you recommend during pregnancy and why?
My recommendation for products for pregnancy would be my Coconut Seaweed Soap Bar with organic coconut pieces for mild exfoliation. It is unscented, mild and gentle and safe for pregnancy and children. I would also opt for an unscented massage wax made with olive wax for use during pregnancy to help retain elasticity.
Q+1.: Which one is your favourite product and why?
Soap was my original first love when it comes to formulating, I enjoy the challenge or working with natural colours and the unpredictability of the results depending on temperature and harvesting of the herbs and plant used to give the oils their beautiful colours. My favorite product would have to be Chocolate Seaweed Soap. I love a scrub bar for use on the body. Especially cellulite prone areas. I use this every day. Since using my own soaps my skin is soft and silky. I use my body butters probably twice a month and that’s it! Super concentrated ingredients.
