Premier League Preview

Liverpool

Liverpool finally and truly challenged for the title again, after a few poor years by their standards.

Manager: Brendan Rodgers
Captain: Steven Gerrard
13/14 position: 2nd
Top League Goalscorer: Luis Suarez 31

It is a story of so near yet so far for Liverpool. A side that not many tipped for a title challenge at the start of the season, Rodgers’ reds were rampant, as they attacked the Premier League quite literally, with the Ulsterman’s team playing the exhilirating football Liverpool dreamt of after several years of relative mediocrity.

Gerrard, in his twilight years now, had one of his best seasons for a while, and the front line of Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling, who made his undoubted breakthrough, scared the bejeezus out of defenders who had no idea what to do with them.

Sturridge looks set to become the number one striker at Anfield after Suarez’s departure to Spain.

But the ultimate star of the show was Luis Suarez. His 31 goals despite missing the start of the season showed the undoubted class that is sometimes forgotten when discussing the mercurial Uruguayan. He had to do that at times, as Liverpool’s defence was far leakier than the one along the M62 at the Etihad.

Rodgers now not only faces the challenge of combining the Premier League and the Champions League, but also without his star man who made it all possible. The Reds manager has been busy in the transfer market, buying the Southampton trio Lambert, Lallana and Lovren, as well as Benfica’s highly rated Lazar Markovic, but Suarez is an understandbly huge miss. 5th

FANS OPINION: Max Saakyan @OleOleMax

What is your idea of a good season for your club?
For Liverpool, it’s either going to go really well, or badly. Top four is great, not achieving that is poor. So I would say a good season for Liverpool is getting Champions League again and maybe get some sort of silverware, like the FA Cup.

Worst case scenario?
Worst case scenario? Well, I would say getting liquidated.

Best player?
Our best player for this season, this is tough. But I would say Sterling, he was superb last season and I can see him having an outstanding season.

Player you’d happily drive to his next club?
Glen Johnson, god. He used to be an awesome right back, but now he’s poor. He’s terrible defensively and he’s ‘okay’ at going forward.

Fans hero?
It’s gotta be Gerrard. Sadly, this season could be his last proper season. Scary just even thinking about that.

If you could pick, who would you want your team to do the double over this year? Chelsea. Mourinho, their fans….. absolutely awful.

League winners?
I’m putting my bet on City, they have an immense squad and starting eleven.

Relegated?
Hull, Leicester and Burnley.

Surprise package?
My surprise package is either Stoke or West Ham. I can see Bojan being a bit hit for Stoke.

Who will win the golden boot?
Daniel Sturridge, I reckon he’s going to score around 27 goals this season.
