8 March 2024, Jakarta — Indonesia’s Chef de Mission (CdM) for Paris Olympics 2024, Anindya Bakrie, highlighted the importance of Indonesia’s CdM on GIPA’s event, the Global Connect Series (GCS): Developing Indonesia for a more sustainable and healthy future. This event delved into the look of Indonesia’s strategic positioning for the Paris Olympics 2024 as well as Indonesia’s ESG and future initiatives.

“It’s the first Olympics after COVID-19, therefore the world will come together to celebrate,” Anindya Bakrie said.

This year’s olympics is unique as it is held during the biggest ‘election year’ of the world. As Indonesia just recently finished outs, it’s a good time for everyone to unify again for our athletes.

The discussion event was hosted by the Global Indonesian Professionals’ Association (GIPA) and is the first installment of GIPA’s Global Connect Series in 2024. The event featured other household names in Indonesia’s ESG industry such as Hamdan Hamedan, Special Advisor to the Minister of Youth and Sports, and Ferro Ferizka Aryananda, Executive Director at Pijar Foundation.

Mr Bakrie’s aim for the CdM is to “memasyaratkan olahraga, mengolahragakan masyarakat” by making the athletes hero for the country in the Paris Olympics and making the government invest more money in Indonesian sports.

The CEO of Bakrie & Borthers continued saying that the Paris Olympics will feature four new sports, namely surfing, skateboarding, breakdancing, and speed climbing, all which the Indonesian team have potential to compete.

Hamdan Hamedan, Special Advisor for the Minister of Youth and Sports (Kemenpora), said that the government are pursuing more physical activities for their people.

“Other countries invests around 10% for sports from their respective GDPs, Indonesia only invest 0.8%,” Mr Hamedan said. “Sports should be the main fulcrum of Indonesian government and people.”

Research prove that Indonesian people are less active and therefore, the government is advocating a healthier environment through the Minister of Youth and Sports, Kemenpora.

Ferro Ferizka, Executive Director of Pijar Foundation, agreed that Indonesia’s resources are very rich and we must utilise it.

Mr Ferizka also noted on how 2034 is a very important year for the goal of Indonesia Emas 2045 as our demographic bonus will expire.

“Therefore, our window of opportunities are only ten years,” Ferro Ferizka said. “If we fail to capture these opportunities, we will fail forever.”
