Around two-thirds of companies in Germany, Austria and Switzerland do not have an integrated digital strategy. Above all, trade has a lot of catching up to do.

Not even one in five smaller companies is able to coordinate their digital projects; By sector, banks and insurance companies are at the forefront of coordinated action (49 percent), followed by the public sector (45 percent). Clearly in the back of the trade is 24 per cent (more: the trade generates digital added value ). This is the result of the current "4 digital" study by the consulting company Oliver Wyman.

Insufficient digitization capabilities

About half of the companies see a lack of awareness among individual employees as well as their inadequate digitization capabilities as the two most important organizational obstacles on the way to the digital future.

On top of this is a decent IT: According to the study, some 60 percent of the CIOs and IT leaders interviewed said that their IT had to be more dynamic and flexible in order to be prepared for digitization. The hurdles at the strategic level: 40 percent of the surveyed companies have not yet developed a digitalization strategy, and in just as many companies the responsibility for digitization is not clearly assigned, but is spread over several shoulders.

Success factors on the way to digital transformation

Oliver Wyman's corporate consultants identify key factors in how the path to digital transformation can be achieved quickly and successfully. Around three-quarters of respondents believe that networked communication , a company-friendly digital culture and cross-sectoral thinking are essential for digital transformation. The introduction of new methods and management approaches in digital transformation should also be a top priority, the CEO must have the last word.
It is also around 60 per cent of the companies surveyed, while for smaller companies it is even 84 per cent, essential for managers to have a technical understanding to drive their company into the digital future. More than 60 per cent of the interviewees take this view, which is particularly true for small and medium-sized companies.

Furthermore, digitalization requires a dedicated security strategy. More than three-quarters of companies surveyed have identified the specific IT security requirements of digitalization and have either developed or are working on a dedicated security strategy.
In the period from November to December 2016, more than 300 IT managers were interviewed in companies of the DACH region.
