Why Self-Organizing is So Hard

Zappos sure expects a lot of emotional labor from their workers

Hsieh must be a truly hellish boss to work for.

Normal bosses just expect you to show up, do your job, go home.

This douche expects you to do enormous amounts of emotional labor — mandatory cheerfulness and “spontaneous” forced playfulness, and if you don’t play along you lose your job.

Lots of men with heavily female workforces inflict that kind of psychological sadism on their workers as a condition of employment.

Now he wants his workers to manage themselves?

Fine — hand OWNERSHIP of the company over to the employees AND LEAVE.

If you want the profits of running the company but aren’t prepared for the headaches of actually running it, you don’t belong in business.
