GERRYMANDERING OF HOUSE DISTRICT 105

Cartoon image on how the GOP cheats to win.

“Wisconsin courts struck down the state’s legislative districts because they were unconstitutionally GERRYMANDERED to favor Republicans”…Sounds familiar? In 2014 Georgia Republicans purposely redrew House District 105, where unfortunately Joyce Chandler won and minorities are being represented by someone who does not represent them or their issues. Over the course of four election cycles, the GOP has purposely redrawn districts to take away votes, the more votes they take away the more opportunities they gain to win seats and remain in the majority. As we have witnessed these past eight years, having the GOP in the majority will not be good for Georgia or Gwinnett county with our diverse population and issues.

The purpose of gerrymandering is to dilute minority votes making it easier for Republicans to win. Lawrenceville, Grayson, and Snellville are the cities that make up House District 105 and have a high population of African-Americans. The voter turnout for House District 105 is high because of this, the GOP redrew the district eliminating votes of African-Americans. When discussing voter suppression, gerrymandering is one of the forms Republicans use against minorities because they do not want them to vote and elect a representative that will fight for their issues and what matters to them. House District 105 is where we can see how gerrymandering allows the Republicans to continue to have someone in a position representing people but does not represent their issues.

The federal district courts of Wisconsin has taken a bold step to strike down legislative districts that are unfavorable to voters. This bold step is the first of many to stop the unequal redrawing of districts favoring Republicans to keep their seats and to gain more seats. If Georgia federal courts would make the same bold step, House District 105 and many other districts similar will have a favorable chance of electing a Democrat. More importantly, voters will have the opportunity to elect someone who represents them, their issues and represents them ethically.
