Introducing our sustainable approach to ice hockey sticks

Did you know: estimated 3+ million composite hockey sticks are produced every year where almost all (>70%) of these sticks are destined for a landfill.

The Issue

Composite ice hockey sticks have traditionally been made primarily from carbon fibers (among other materials), a non-renewable material that requires energy-intensive production processes and is non-biodegradable. Moreover, the mass production of composite hockey sticks in China contributes to long transportation distances and increased carbon emissions. Approximately 70% of the produced composite sticks, totaling around 2.1 million sticks each year, end up in landfills annually.

On the other hand, no real alternative to composite sticks has been tested in the market — here we come into play by providing an upgraded version of the good old wood stick (reduced weight by nearly one-third, providing Flex starting at 70 (Seniors), shafts with grip, and extra small shafts for kids). See our testing results here.

Our Approach

We are excited to introduce an environmentally sustainable alternative — a groundbreaking line of ice hockey sticks that prioritizes sustainability while maintaining high performance. Our sticks are crafted with a strong focus on the environment, providing a unique option to composite sticks. Here’s how we ensure sustainability:

Eco-Friendly Materials // EU grown trees: our sticks are primarily crafted using responsibly sourced ultralight wood, used for the shafts core part, from sustainable managed plantations in Spain. Further, for some parts of the stick we use wood (beech and ash) sourced from Slovakia and Czech Republic. Wood is a renewable resource, significantly reducing the carbon footprint associated with stick production. This approach minimizes reliance on non-renewable materials and lessens environmental impact.

Handcrafted (Made) in the EU: Each stick is handcrafted by skilled artisans from a third-generation, family-owned stick manufacturer based in the EU. Additionally, the manufacturer presses sawdust into pallets used for heating the production facility.

Local Sourcing: All our materials are sourced within Europe, and the manufacturing process takes place within the EU. This reduces transportation distances and the resulting carbon emissions.

Biodegradable Shafts: Our shafts are easily biodegradable (after removing laminate), making them environmentally friendly. However, further research is underway to develop biodegradable blades as well as biobased laminate.

Packaging and Delivery: We adopt a holistic approach to sustainability by using plastic-free, renewable packaging materials. Additionally, we offer CO2-neutral delivery options to our online customers. Our commitment to eco-friendly practices extends throughout the entire production and distribution process.

Carbon Neutral Stick: We are dedicated to providing a self-sufficient, carbon-neutral stick by planting trees (providing ultralight wood, crucial for our shafts) in partnership with our wood supplier on unused agricultural land to meet our forecasted demand for sticks and beyond. These trees, once fully grown (approximately 8 years after planting), are estimated to absorb 2.5 tons of CO2 each, making them ten times more effective than other species. Furthermore, the trees help to fight erosion, purify the soil and waters, and clean the air. Apart from the environmental benefits, these agricultural plantations also provide additional income to local farmers. We will transparently report on the progress of our planting efforts, including on-the-ground updates.

Continuous Improvement: While we strive to be environmentally responsible, we acknowledge that we are not yet perfect (e.g., not all components are 100% biodegradable/biobased). Hence, we are committed to continuously seeking alternatives and implementing biodegradable materials wherever possible.

By following these steps, we aim to revolutionize the hockey industry by offering sustainable products that minimize the sport’s ecological impact while maintaining performance standards.
