He is naughty and not particularly nice, but he is so adorable you’d definitely want to have him for the holidays, whether as a guest or as a gift. He is another proof confirming the tried and tested hypothesis that girls like bad boys. And despite his mangy dreadlocks, his non-committal womanizing and his intense love affair with rum, he has managed to win the hearts of many probably because of these same characteristics.

This man’s name? You don’t even have to guess. It’s CAPTAIN Jack Sparrow.

The Captain at First Sight

It would have been a lot better if he were real. But sadly, this much adored pirate is only a fictional character. He is the chief protagonist in the adventure-fantasy film series The Pirates of the Caribbean, debuting in its first movie installment, The Curse of the Black Pearl.

Portrayed by renowned actor Johnny Depp, Sparrow was introduced as a pirate trying to regain the Black Pearl, a ship that he had captained for years. His character would eventually delve into deeper mysteries involving his past, his father and his adventures.

Johnny Depp: Breathing Life into the Sparrow

A man overflowing with wit, ingenuity and charm, Captain Jack Sparrow was the brainchild of screenwriter Ted Elliot and film writer/producer Terry Rossi. Inspired by the characters of Bugs Bunny and Groucho Marx, Sparrow was originally created to serve as a supporting character in the series. However, Depp’s portrayal rendered the character outstanding, making Sparrow the overall protagonist albeit his tendencies to become the “bad guy”.

Depp, on his part, wanted to make his portrayal as realistic as possible. Thus, he researched on how pirates were during the 18th century and further enriched the character, creating one hell of a pirate that would soon become an icon. He embellished Sparrow’s character with inspiration from the skunk cartoon character Pepé Le Pew and The Rolling Stones’ guitarist, Keith Richards, who appears in the series as Jack’s father. And, with the stark mannerisms that are sure to call the character to mind, Depp also gave the Captain his trademark slurred and accented manner of speaking and the characteristic flailing of his hands when he is running.

Captain Jack Sparrow, Totally Captured.

People who have seen at least one of the four movies in the series would remember Captain Jack Sparrow being chased, be it by the Royal Navy or by Davey Jones and his slimy minions. However, with his one hundred and one disguises and over a hundred times more crafty ideas for escape, his pursuers are often left to watch him say, “You will always remember this as the day that you ALMOST caught Captain Jack Sparrow.” But then again, those pursuers aren’t as creative as the artists who have other ideas of capturing the elusive pirate.

Arrayed here are some of the best digital artworks that resemble canvas posters, effectively capturing johnny depp as captain jack sparrow from his deep set eyes and characteristic dreads to his braided beard and his often grungy multi-layered outfit.
