Making a github.io Website without Knowing Git

Making a website shouldn’t be that difficult. One of the nice things about github is that they will host a website for you. This tutorial goes through a step by step process of setting up a website with no real knowledge of git.

  1. Make a github account. The important thing is that your username will decide what your domain name is for your .github.io website. More on this in a bit.
Username in this example is mGalarnyk

2. Create a new github repository (repo) on GitHub.The name of the repo should be username.github.io. Since my username is mgalarnyk, my repo name is mgalarnyk.github.io. If you have are having trouble, please see the video or ask a question on the youtube video.

Repo Name should be named username.github.io

3. Every site should have a index.html file in it. If you dont know how to do it, press create new file and add the following code to it. Call the file index.html. This is done at 1:58 in the movie.

Hello World HTML

Commit the changes. Again if you don’t know how to do this, please see the youtube video (2:38 minute mark)

Creating index.html file

4. Your site should be ready in about 30 minutes after you have created your index.html file.

The next tutorial will go over how to make a github.io website when you know some git.
