Cannabis, marijuana, and hemp are often used interchangeably, but they are not the same thing. While they are all part of the cannabis plant family, they differ in their chemical makeup, physical characteristics, and uses. Understanding the differences between these terms can help you make informed decisions when it comes to using or buying cannabis products.

Cannabis: The Basics

Cannabis refers to a plant genus that includes three species: Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica, and Cannabis ruderalis. These plants contain compounds called cannabinoids, which are responsible for their psychoactive and medicinal effects. The two most well-known cannabinoids are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD).

Marijuana: The THC-Rich Cannabis Plant

Marijuana is a term used to describe cannabis plants that contain high levels of THC, the cannabinoid responsible for the plant’s psychoactive effects. Marijuana is known for its intoxicating effects and is used for both medicinal and recreational purposes. It is often smoked or vaporized, but can also be consumed in the form of edibles or used in topicals such as creams or balms.

Hemp: The CBD-Rich Cannabis Plant

Hemp is a term used to describe cannabis plants that contain low levels of THC, typically less than 0.3%. Instead, hemp plants contain higher levels of CBD, a non-psychoactive cannabinoid that is known for its potential health benefits. Hemp is used for a variety of purposes, including the production of textiles, paper, and building materials, as well as for its nutritional value in foods such as hemp seeds and oil.

Understanding the Differences

While all three terms refer to the cannabis plant family, the differences lie in their chemical makeup and intended uses. Marijuana is typically used for its psychoactive effects, while hemp is used for its potential health benefits and industrial purposes.

In terms of legality, marijuana is still illegal at the federal level in the United States, although it has been legalized for medicinal and/or recreational use in many states. Hemp, on the other hand, was legalized under the 2018 Farm Bill and is now legal to grow and use in the U.S.

When it comes to buying cannabis products, it is important to understand the differences between these terms. Products made from marijuana will typically have higher levels of THC, while products made from hemp will have higher levels of CBD. Knowing this information can help you choose the product that is right for your needs.

In addition, it is important to note that while THC and CBD are the most well-known cannabinoids, there are many other cannabinoids that can be found in cannabis plants. Each cannabinoid has its own potential health benefits and effects on the body, which is why some people prefer to use products that contain a variety of cannabinoids instead of just one.
