The Casual Fascism of Strategy Games

This is an interesting line of thought, and I’ve noticed it too; there are definitely a lot of strategy games that luxuriate in these notions of total exclusive control and homogeneity.

I’m really interested in Endless Space 2 for this reason — the developers have historically included mechanics in their 4X games that promote multicultural empires instead of homogeneous ones, and ES2 is going even further in that direction, as well as including a population-driven senate that affects what kind of policies can be adopted. The game will also have almost zero battlefield control, so the player/political leader is more strongly separated from military leadership.

Not perfect in this regard, but I find the developers make refreshingly different 4X games that lean further from these trends than the 4X norm.
