“I Want to Write Video Games”

This was fantastic.

I’ve always greatly enjoyed video games. I grew up on Star Fox, Mario, Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and KOTOR, and the modern BioWare games and even Destiny have created worlds that capture the imagination and bring the players into the experience in ways other mediums never could. And while I am one of those people who would identify thier dream job as a video game writer, I also understand that I’m not in a prime location to do so, neither in global location nor phase of life. Wife still in school, 10-month old child, living 400 miles from the nearest game studio, all of this adds up to the odds being a little against me.

Lucky for me, I’m only 25. While I may not be at a place right now that this is a likely scenario for me, I get that life sometimes takes you places you don’t expect, for reasons you never would have dreamed just a month before, and the most you can do is to prepare for what you want to be able to do. Right now, this means playing some different games, write branching narratives for my submission for this year’s NaNoWriMo, and work on those insane characters I have running around in my head.

And of course, there’s always the off chance that the friends-of-a-friend who want to make thier own game and are looking for a writer will ask me to help them, which, lets be honest, would be awesome.

If anything else, I think I’ve learned that, despite all of the things you listed above that could be pretty discouraging to aspiring writers who want desperately to get into the field you’ve thrived in, I am really in this for the long haul. And that is an incredibly reassuring thing to know.

Thanks for the awesome games you’ve written for, and for the advice and knowledge. Looking forward to your upcoming work.
