Thanks Steven, I agree the design response from most vendors is well below par, as an independent I have seen this as well.
I have sat in those meetings and been the only voice of decent with the vendors design. Many of these designs would never have approved internally are allowed to pass because it was from a better design source.
We all know this comes down to profitable budgets and minimal time spent on the project components — just enough to make the client happy.
It gets worse, as you have pointed out, when the vendor is in sales mode as only 30–40% of the time is spent on the project, the rest extending the contract or looking for new projects to transition into.
