Libraries are More than Just Books | Gary Wasdin

When you think of a library, you probably assume it’s a place for books. This cognitive thinking is based on a century of public engagement with libraries. However, while they are indeed a resource for books for the public, they’re also so much more. When the American Library Association was created in 1958, books were one of the primary features. Back then, books were marked for checkout by date due stamps. Today, libraries are so much more than books. Technology has been one of the driving forces behind how libraries grow within their communities, but there has also been a drive to become more of a community hub.

Although books are an essential factor to check out at libraries, let’s take a moment to appreciate all that libraries have to offer.

Classes & Events

No matter your age, your public library has a class or event which anyone can attend. Take the Omaha Public Library of Nebraska for example– There are 900 total events currently offered on their calendar. From open read-a-longs for children to advanced learning classes for adults, libraries have plenty of opportunities to further education.

Libraries will have workshops, crafting, classes, and even story times that anyone in the public area can attend. This is an incredible opportunity for people to increase their knowledge and life skills. Kids that attend story time get an opportunity to socialize and have fun all at the same time.

Movies & Music

Most public libraries have a selection of movies and music that you can borrow or download for your personal enjoyment or even an educational experience. Not only can you check out books, but you can check out a movie that you’ve always wanted to watch, or an album that you haven’t listened to yet. Whether you’re analog or digital, your library will meet your needs!

Volunteer Opportunities

Looking for a way to give back and get involved in your community? Public libraries offer many different kinds of volunteer opportunities. In some libraries, you can volunteer to organize books, set up/break down events held at the library, read a book during story time, teach a class, and so much more. If you’re unsure how to help out at your local library, ask your librarian if they need volunteers to see if you’re a good match.

It’s easy to find reasons to love libraries, but even easier to find a way to get involved. Omaha Public Library in Nebraska has community engagement and outreach opportunities.

Speakers and Authors

Despite all of these changes, libraries are still committed to books and reading. Many libraries bring in speakers and authors to discuss specific books, or even have an author book signing. Scholastic has an author visit program that allows authors to visit institutions. By connecting with the writer behind a book that you’ve read or plan to read, it brings a personal feel to something you’ve put time in. It’s easy for people to become passionate about the books they read, and connecting with true authors is an experience of a lifetime. Check out your local library’s calendar to find their events and author visits!
