St Angela Merici: 10 Phrases to Become Holy

Today, January 27, the Catholic Liturgy celebrates the memory of Saint Angela Merici, Founder of the Company of Saint Ursula.

Newsroom (27/01/2022 11:00 AM, Gaudium Press) Born on March 21, 1474, in the Italian city of Desenzano del Garda, Saint Angela sought to love God since her childhood, dedicating her still short life to prayer and penance. Her father used to tell her the life stories of the saints, encouraging her to follow the same path. With a heart yearning to lead a more austere and penitential life, at the age of 20, he dedicated himself to spiritual and corporal works of mercy, serving young people who were at moral risk. His work was approved through a dream, in which he saw young men with crowns of lilies walking toward heaven. A second heavenly vision made her decide to undertake a pilgrimage to holy places, such as Mantua, the Sacred Mount of Varallo, and the Holy Land. At this point in her life, the Saint lost her sight. Resigned and after accepting this cross given by Divine Providence, Angela had her sight restored while praying before the Crucifix. In 1525 she went on a pilgrimage to Rome, where she found her charism. On November 25, 1535, Saint Angela founded the “Company of Saint Ursula.” The rule of the Order was innovative: working outside the convent, dedicated to the instruction and education of women, with a vow of obedience to the Bishop and the Church. Their purpose was to sanctify the family and the entire society through women. On January 27, 1540, at 66, Saint Angela surrendered her soul to God. Her remains are preserved in the Church of St. Afra in Brescia. In 1544, Pope Paul III elevated the “Company of Saint Ursula” to an Institute of Pontifical Right. In 1768, Pope Clement XIII beatified Angela Merici. She was canonized by Pope Pius VIII on May 24, 1807.
