Are you suffering from holiday blues?
Sadly, it’s that time of year again.
The temperature is getting cooler, the evenings are getting darker. Summer almost seems like a distant memory.
Feeling miserable about starting work again? Hesistant to get back into a fixed routine?
You may be suffering from post vacation syndrome — yes it does exist!! This takes Monday blues to a whole new level!
With most people taking their holiday time in the summer months, September is the month where employees feel the most unmotivated and disengaged. This is only natural.
If you’ve spent the past week or so in paradise with the only worry being ‘which beach should I spend the day at?’ then of course it’s going to be hard to get back into the swing of things.
Here are some tips to help you ease yourself in a bit more gently:
Totally cut ties with work contacts
It may be easy to keep your phone on ‘just in case’ Switch it off. You only get a couple of weeks off so make the most of it! Holidays are all about relaxing. You have to switch off mentally to enjoy yourself.
Don’t go straight back to work
So you’ve just returned after a horrendous plane journey home. It was delayed for hours, you were stuck behind a screaming baby and you didn’t get home until after dark. You can’t possibly imagine getting up for work in the morning! If you can, work at home for a day, or plan ahead and make sure you return during the weekend so you still have another day at home before you fully throw yourself into work-mode.
The ‘I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it’ attitude should be avoided at all costs.
There’s nothing worse than dreading the first day at work, knowing that you have to tackle your endless amount of work that you left behind. Don’t get caught up on holiday mode before you even jet off! Make sure you take the time to sort out the important stuff in your last couple of days. Trust me, you will thank yourself later on!
Lastly — Keep yourself motivated
Holiday blues are inevitable. You find that the days go by in a flash and before you know it you have to return home. Well, perk yourself up a bit by looking forward to the next one! Start researching where you want to go next, do you want to go back to the same place, or do you want to explore somewhere new? Have some ideas in mind. Get a date to put in your calendar ASAP.
Before you know it, it’ll be summer again!!
