[Anime Feature] Does Demi-chan wa Kataritai Objectify Disabled Girls?
Demi-chan wa Kataritai is a winter 2017 anime about a society in which ‘demi-humans’ exist alongside humans. A demi-human, as the name suggests, is half-human and half “monster”. Each main character in the show has different traits that make normal human interaction rather difficult for them.
The girls come to trust and rely on Takahashi sensei. In many ways Takahashi helps the girls a great deal, by providing them a place to discuss their unique conditions and bond with one another. He is constantly looking out for the girls, such as suggesting Machi be allowed to carry a backpack instead of the school issued book bag for her own safety. He also performs home visits and seems to genuinely care about the girls and their troubles.
However, in some ways, the anime Demi-chan wa Kataritai objectifies the girls by hyper-focusing on their disabilities. Takashi’s extreme obsession with demi-humans can also be viewed as a negative as well as a positive.
