I will tell you something that sounds harsh, but it’s the truth.

Most copywriters aren’t concerned about effective advertising. They are concerned with sounding clever, witty and winning stupid, meaningless awards.

And that’s precisely the reason why:

  • 80% of copywriters earn $0
  • 18% barely earn a livable wage
  • 2% are decamillionaires

But why? What’s holding back decent and talented writers from landing clients, converting traffic and making the reader to consume their content like a vacuum?

They NEVER listen to their MARKET!

Read that one more time…

One more.

Good. That’s the secret to sales, marketing, copywriting and honestly, the whole make-money thing.

You don’t write to win a Pulitzer or a Nobel or an Oscar. You’re not writing for yourself or your family or your *audience*.

You are writing for a very specific market, with specific needs and pains, that wants a specific solution. Your product or your client’s product, offer that solution hopefully.

If you’re a freelance copywriter, get this:

You aren’t working for your client. You don’t write for him/her and you certainly won’t take any of their whims, if they’re not aligned with what the market demands.

Guess what? Your boss is the MARKET!

If you’re looking for a copywriter, get this:

He/she is not working for you. YOU and YOUR needs have NOTHING to do with what the market needs and wants. Let your copywriter write the copy that’s effective, not the one you think is good.

Guess what? You DO have a boss, the Market!

Now, let’s talk about Market research and How to follow the 50/30/20 rule for amazing results

As a copywriter, your time should be divided as such:

  1. 50% of your time, prior writing the copy, should be spend in forums, reading comments, blog posts, hanging out and talking with people in your market niche.
  2. 30% on positioning
  3. 20% on writing

See, writing is very easy to do. Write 1000 words everyday for a year and you’ll become decent.

What seperates the amateurs from the professionals is understanding the MARKET.

Here are the people you sell to!

You make money doing the ground work, the dirty stuff. Anyone can slap together two half-decent sentences, use a bit of urgency and present that as “effective copy”.

And when you, the owner, runs the ad you face shitty conversion rates and you don’t make profit!

“But why? The ad seemed fine, he applied the fundamental principles of copywriting, I don’t understand why the copy doesn’t convert!”

You keep repeating the ad, without changing a thing, thinking that something will magically change.

No. Until your copywriter writes for your specific audience, nothing will change and you’ll wonder why your business isn’t growing…

Copywriting is the lifeline of every business

That’s very true. Even if you have the biggest, most innovative idea in the world, you won’t go far if you don’t understand the fundamental principles of copywriting.

You may not like this fact, but it remains one!

Do you think Steve Jobs was successful because his ideas where original? Do you think he was the first person who thought of putting music inside a device without a CD?

Hell no!

People won’t buy into your idea, but they’ll buy into your vision.

And this is where marketing comes in. It takes your vision and it creates a relatable brand. That’s how you make businesses.

Look, I know what you’re thinking.

“My company doesn’t have a greater vision. We are a small business and…”

You don’t have to be a multimillion dollar company to have a vision. Think big my man.

(Note: Copywriting will give you confidence in your abilities and the potential of your business. And once you have that, nothing will appear TOO big).

Actually, it doesn’t matter if you’re a freelancer, web developer, a teacher, an entrepreneur, a mother, a doctor. Either you own a small business or an international company.

Copywriting can take your average ROI and your below market standards conversion rates, and absolutely explode them.

If you don’t believe me, just ask any successful businessman. Ask these two questions:

  • Do you think marketing is important?
  • How many copywriters have you hired?

It’s an evergreen skill.
