There’s no Self-Improvement, Only Self-Development
But don’t ask Tony Robbins about it…
Yeah, I was one of them. The self-improvement junkies.
“Please sir, give me another Carnegie audio book, I need it! Even a short Nike commercial, please I promise it’s the last time”
After devouring a bunch of nonsensical blogs posts and motivation videos (I didn’t really read many self-help books, THANK GOD!), I started noticing the same pattern over and over again.
- Work hard
- Talk to people
- Don’t be stupid
- Be lucky
- Wake up early
- Take cold showers
- Read books (my marketing senses are tingling)
It got boring. My head was filled with motivational speakers, screaming platitudes, yet I didn’t see any tangible improvements in my life, except…
Except that I did, but not because of the above.
See, what those people never mention, is that experience + time + purpose will take care of most of your hypothetical discipline problems. Hence the title.
When your values are aligned, you have a clear vision, you have a plan to get there… then discipline, hard work etc are complimentary.
Instead of beating yourself mentally because you slept in or because you don’t work 24/7, perhaps consider what it is that you’re looking for.
It’s easy to get influenced my other people’s expectations and life. Check out instagram and you THINK you want to be a multimillionaire, living in a mansion.
But do you? Do you actually want those things? Are you willing to make the sacrifices for it ?
Be honest with yourself.
Self improvement is an oxymoron. You are improving to reach an arbitrary goal, to become someone who does a specific thing.
Look at YOUR skills. Look at your psychological profile and see where your natural development will take you.
Take me for example. I always had a knack for writing. I don’t need discipline, I don’t need to wake up at 5am to get it done.
Writing comes easy to me. It’s not forced. I simply do it. I didn’t spend a fortune to learn to write.
I don’t procrastinate when I am about to write.
You are not Joco Willick or Gary VAYAYEHAASDKWAK or whatever is his name.
You are YOU!
Find that one you do effortlessely and you don’t really hate doing all the time.
And then develop your talent.
Easy.
