I think Apple may have the perception of becoming “stale” because their designs are classic. From a designer’s point of view, the UX design of iPhones and Macbooks are virtually flawless. It is the gold standard in design. The real innovation for Apple, I believe, happens incrementally and is found in the finest details.

Are they playing it safe? Probably. But until many of the emerging technologies mature (and thus integrate with smartphones), mobile technology will not witness any explosive innovations.
