The first day of Consensus has come to an end, and what a day! Philip Young, Marketing and Business Development Director of GBX, is attending the conference that attracts more than 8,000 attendees to New York from more than 100 different nations.

One thing was clear—Gibraltar is very much present at Consensus this year. There is a lot of movement and global interest since the DLT Framework was established, and it’s even more encouraging to see so many from the local community in Gibraltar heading to New York to keep promoting the jurisdiction as a fintech hub.

Even amongst the sea of people, the familiar faces stand out and Philip Young managed to catch up with a few.

But it’s not just the private sector that is on the road.

The Hon. Albert Isola, Minister for Commerce — HM Government of Gibraltar, took part in a panel on the first day. Gibraltar as a jurisdiction has become a global player in the blockchain and crypto space.

During the panel, the Minister explained that since the announcement of the DLT Framework in January, “the response globally has been phenomenal.” He added that as a government, they don’t believe they have all the answers, but that they are aiming to “provide a framework that encourages innovation.”

Later on the first day, Eva Kaili, MEP, sat on a regulatory focused panel. During the discussion she said; “places in the European Union at the forefront of providing regulatory structure include Gibraltar, UK and Estonia. There is a need for regulatory certainty.”

Regulation is currently one of the most talked about topics within the industry. Ms Kaili then added: “We’re [at EU level] working on new and specific definitions for tokens and ICOs.” Finishing the panel, she commented that “there exists a huge concentration of wealth, power, data and technology. Decentralisation is a means and tool to distribute wealth, power, data and technology.”

There is a great atmosphere here at Consensus and as always, the event is just fantastic. The buzz and continued interest around Gibraltar and the GBX is so encouraging to see.
