Not Your Typical 9–5 Job: What Motivates Full-Time YouTube Creators to Keep Producing Content
“One of the huge mistakes people make is that they try to force an interest on themselves. You don’t choose your passions; your passions choose you.”
— Jeff Bezos
What, exactly, motivates YouTubers to keep doing what they’re doing? It’s a great question and the answers are varied and nuanced as a generation of Creator Economy entrepreneurs are all driven by something different.
We believe many YouTube Creators are motivated by a combination of intrinsic and extrinsic factors that drive them to keep producing content.
As one example, we talked with Cecil Cicirello, a podcaster and owner of the emerging Season Liberally YouTube cooking channel, who recently made the transition from years of traditional employment with a university to being self-employed as a full-time podcaster and YouTuber.
“As my own boss, I do feel the responsibility to produce quality content but now my work schedule is incredibly flexible. I can sleep in and stay up late to finish a video if I need to. I can take time out of my workday and run errands and I don’t have to request time off. This freedom motivates me to succeed so I can keep enjoying this kind of flexibility”
In addition to Cecil’s perspective, we’ve also identified some other motivations that may keep YouTube entrepreneurs going:
💗Passion and Creativity
Many YouTube Creators are passionate about the topics they cover in their videos. They genuinely enjoy creating content, expressing their ideas, educating, and sharing their expertise or interests with their audience. This intrinsic motivation can be a powerful driving force and supports the adage, do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.
Building a community and interacting with viewers can be incredibly rewarding. Creators often feel connected to their audience, value the comments and feedback they receive, and find satisfaction in the impact their content has on others. At GigaStar, we believe our mission to bring YouTube Creators and Fans together as partners helps reinforce and enrich these special community ties.
Seeing their content improve, watching their subscriber count grow, and witnessing positive changes in their skills and confidence can be personally fulfilling. Creators often set goals and feel a sense of accomplishment when they achieve them. With YouTube, data on subscribers, watch time, and other engagement analytics can help spotlight the positive changes that may lead to a feeling of personal fulfillment.
For some Creators, YouTube can be a source of income. As their channel gains popularity, they may earn money through ad revenue, sponsorships, merchandise sales, or through crowdfunding platforms like GigaStar. The open earning potential of self-employed YouTubers versus a fixed salary or hourly rate from traditional employment may provide an additional incentive.
YouTube provides a platform for Creators to express themselves creatively. The sky is the limit! They can experiment with different formats, styles, and topics while carving out a category niche that may allow them the freedom to explore new avenues of creativity and showcase their unique perspectives.
🌠Recognition and Fame
Recognition within the YouTube community and even broader recognition can be motivating. Being known as an expert in a particular niche or having a large and engaged subscriber base can be ego-boosting and encouraging.
🔬Learning and Skill Development
Creating content for YouTube often involves a wide range of skills, from video production and editing to storytelling and audience engagement. Creators may find motivation in continually improving these skills. Personal growth can be both gratifying and a motivating factor for Creators to continue pursuing.
🔥Impact and Influence
Knowing that their videos can educate, inspire, entertain, or make a positive impact on people’s lives can be a strong motivator. Creators may take pride in their ability to shape opinions and impact change, whether among a niche community or on a global scale.
🗺️Adaptation and Evolution
YouTube is an ever-evolving platform with new features, trends, and technologies. Creators who enjoy staying at the forefront of these changes may find motivation to adapt their content to fit the latest trends and innovations.
Creators often have long-term aspirations for their channels, such as reaching a certain subscriber count, producing a specific type of content, reaching a certain revenue goal, or collaborating with other Creators. These goals can provide a sense of direction and motivation to keep the Creator energized to produce content for the long term.
It’s important to note that motivations can vary widely among different Creators and can evolve over time. Some Creators may be primarily driven by one or two of these factors, while others are motivated by a combination of several. Additionally, external factors such as changes in the YouTube algorithm, shifts in audience preferences, and market trends can also impact Creators’ motivation.
