Beryl and George Formby were thrown out of South Africa in 1946 for refsuing to play to segregated audiences. George had incensed Malan by hugging a black child on stage and phoned Beryl to complain. Beryl told him to ‘piss off’ and the Formbys were chucked out, sent back to a welcoming Blighty that agreed they had done the right thing
