The claim that it syphons money from public schools ignores the fact that it also takes students. So your expenses should also go down.

Part of the problem with public schools is that they really have no incentive to get better. Our default solution to fixing them, other than by increasing competition through school choice, is throwing more money at them. When something is bad though how is it fixed by spending more money? We already spend more money per student than all, but one other country(a very small European one, I want to say Luxembourg, but that might not be right). How is competition a bad thing? Nobody would accept a public assignment of something in any other phase of their life really. Imagine having no choice on your car or your doctor. It is just as senseless when it comes to education. Could there be potential problems that occur if we didn’t regulate it or attach strings to the money? Sure, but why would we assume that it would function without oversight? It is a straw-man response crafted by a politician who is stumping for public teacher unions.
