There is this tendency these days to over demonize profit. The motive for profit is a pretty good one actually. How would an internet provider benefit from slowing some people down? There is no obvious reason. If one decided to do it for no reason then it would lose customers and profit as a result in fact. The motive for profit cuts multiple ways.
At the same time it makes sense for society to allow some entities like hospitals and some other entities to pay more to get even higher speeds. They would be willing to do so because such a connection would carry more value for them than other entities. Price is the best way that mankind has come up with to distribute finite resources. Motivates people not to waste it and motivates producers to come up with more of it. Price works.
Net neutrality seems like an excuse for a government entity to grab more power for little or no reason. The internet and internet access has been very important for people for decades. Why now are we concerned with different access rates when we have never had better access and access is only anticipated to improve? The point is that the motivation to do what people suddenly fear would have been greater before now. Most of the people behind this movement are left leaning and if you told them you were putting it under the control of the NYPD they would freak out. What do they think the FCC is really? Those in charge of the FCC aren’t anymore noble than a police department. We don’t need to have a government agency protect us on this. If that ends up changing we could always have the isp’s regulated more at that point. So the urgency here is just false.
