Storms Colliding

With a break in the weather, we walked to the boat and took a quick ride. After having intense storms for the past two days, which resulted in over 8 inches of rain, hail, lighting strikes, power loss, and a broken HVAC unit, we needed some fresh air.

Yet, as the sunlight was shining down on the dock, there were dark storm clouds fully circling us. It felt as if we were in a movie where multiple storms were converging. The only thing missing from this erie moment was dark theme music.

With the grandparents and their golden lab on board, Henry and I took to the wheel. He was cautious and wanted my assistance, as he was unsure of what to do. As he sat on my lap, asking questions and steering the boat between the storms, I couldn’t help to think of his future during these turbulent times.

As our country copes with its darkest days for law enforcement since 9/11, hatred seems to be growing instead of diminishing. We find ourselves once again reflecting on all the killings that have become all too common in our society. As a father of a young son, and principal of many young middle school students, I pray that society improves compared to the current state that it’s in for them. Our young children deserve better than what they are watching unfold each day. It’s my hope.

Why do we continue to point fingers at one another instead of embracing as one? When do we stop, look ourselves in the mirror, and begin to think like Martin Luther King Jr., Gandhi, or any other peaceful leaders throughout history that made us look deep into our souls?

While many individuals read news reports, blogs, and hold numerous conversations, the most powerful way to make a change starts and ends in each and every home.

Are we having deep, meaningful conversations face to face, instead of being glued to our devices? Are we instilling to our loved ones that we should respect one another regardless of cultures, race, gender, and/or age?

We must remind our loved ones to respect our elders, authority, law enforcement, and most importantly life.

Life is too precious. Appreciate every moment.

Be the beacon of hope for others and guide their boats between the colliding storms.
