What is EPR and Why it is Important?

EPR stands for Extended Producer Responsibility, it’s an authorization issued by the Central Pollution Control Board of India (CPCB)under MOEFCC, Government of India to electronic producers (importer/Manufacturer), who are into producing electronic goods into Indian Market.

With the authorization of the EPR, the manufacturer/importer who deals in electronic and electrical goods is liable for managing the products at the end of their lifespan. EPR Registration is compulsory for every producer who belongs to the electronic sector.).

The government has taken specific measures under EPR authorization for proper e-waste collection, channelization, dismantling, and electronic waste after the end of life. The method is channelization of e-waste in a suitable, environmentally friendly approach.

Each producer involved in Manufacturing or trading the following electronic objects would need this registration:

Computer & their components with input and output devices, Chargers, Personal computer Laptop & their components, Mainframe, Minicomputer, Battery, LED TV, LED parts, Telephone, Smartphone, Feature phone, Washing machine, Air conditioners & their parts, Products containing electrical circuits and components.

Why EPR is Important?

There is a huge amount of E-waste has been generated in India and it is rapidly increasing day by day which is not having any source of recycling and it is just filling the land while releasing some toxic chemicals into the environment and they are very hazardous to the humans and other living creatures.

To bring these things in Channelization, the Ministry of Forest& climate change (MOEF) has implanted this rule to the Electrical & Electronic Equipment Producers.
