Me Doing Me

Part 1: Making the decision to freeze my eggs & put myself first!

“Vicki, why don’t you do anything the right way?…”

… is what my Korean mother said when I told her I was going to freeze my eggs.

She’s right: I am a woman who wants to do things my own way on my own time. She knows that I am happy and fulfilled with a great career, good friends and hand-selected wines from Napa… but it REALLY bothers her (far more than me) that I am single as all my friends are married with kids.

Me & my momma!

She does, however, trust that she taught me to be a realist and make goals — one being that I do want my own children one day. After living in New York during the period between Sex & the City and Girls, I know one thing… you are lucky if you don’t accidentally get pregnant in your 20s and lucky if you get pregnant in your 30s/40s.

So at 33, I know I’ve been lucky so far but don’t want to push it. Here are the facts I can’t deny:

  • Egg quality and egg quantity decline with age. And there is nothing I can do to dramatically change that.
  • My future (way off in the future) self wants to be a mother and I don’t want to compromise my current self to rush into a relationship or a marriage because of my ticking biological clock.
  • Fertility preservation will freeze the age of my eggs. When I am ready to start a family, I guarantee I’ll be glad I have some younger 33 year old eggs stored away just in case.
  • Egg freezing is no guarantee, but it’s insurance. I may not use them, they may not fertilize, but it at least gives me some peace of mind.

The choice is obvious right? It’s time for me to make my own luck. I can’t win them all, I can only make sure I have no regrets. And to me, that’s freezing my eggs.

Thanks for joining me as I start my journey. I promise it will be fun at least for you, maybe not for me. Let’s all cross our fingers for some Viable Vickis at the end of it!

Like it or not, every woman has to make a decision about her fertility. I meet women making these decisions every day as I travel across the country hosting fertility seminars for Glow. This year, I made my own decision to freeze my eggs. Join me as I start the process or as my friend, Monica, likes to say, “Make Some Viable Vickis.”

See my whole journey here.
