Ahead Of World Hepatitis Day 2017
World hepatitis day (WHD) is usually celebrated annually on 28th July. This year 28th of July, 2017 falls on a Friday.
The Problem:
Viral hepatitis is one of the leading causes of death globally, accounting for 1.34 million deaths per year — that’s as many as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis or malaria. Together, hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C cause 80% of liver cancer cases in the world.

World Hepatitis Day 2017 Campaign Theme: Eliminate Hepatitis
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) , there a five (5) types of hepatitis viruses. Hepatitis A, B, C, D & E. Of these 5 types, B and C are considered the most dangerous, because being infected with hepatitis B or C might lead to chronic hepatitis which is a potential risk factor for cirrhosis of the liver AKA liver cancer. We are all encouraged to participate in this year’s WHD campaign with theme: Eliminate Hepatitis and put a face to it with the #showyourface . Find details about the campaign and how to get involved here.
Join The World Hepatitis Day Campaign
Personally, I’ll be getting involved in the WHD campaign for two reasons. The first being that I have a responsibility as a public health professional to educate the public on this serious public health issue as well as others including primary and secondary prevention of diseases. The second reason is very personal. Some members of my family have suffered from both acute and chronic hepatitis. My mother, eldest sister, immediate younger brother and I at some point have had attacks of acute hepatitis. Unfortunately, I lost my dear uncle (mother’s immediate younger brother), who was a physician to cancer of the liver. Sadly too, I lost my mother’s cousin to hepatitis. If you can relate to the challenge of hepatitis in any way, then join the WHD campaign
Send a passport photograph (selfie of you) to www.worldhepatitisday.orgwith your short WHD message as shown in the example below

Feel free to send me your passport photos as show above with the same message. I will create a group poster as shown below

Feel free to share your thoughts on the WHD campaign.
Please, let everyone who reads this post share it and join in the campaign. Everyone deserves good health.
