Turkish authorities have recently seized a substantial amount of cocaine in one of the country’s largest drug busts, highlighting concerns over Turkey’s role as a transit hub for narcotics entering Europe. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced the confiscation of 608 kilograms of cocaine, mostly in liquid form, along with a significant quantity of precursor chemicals used in drug processing. The operation targeted an international gang led by a Lebanese-Venezuelan national, resulting in the detention of several suspects, including foreigners and Turkish nationals.

According to experts monitoring organized crime, Turkey has seen a significant increase in cocaine seizures, indicating its emergence as a key route for drug trafficking from South America to Europe. The rise in seizures does not align with domestic consumption patterns, suggesting that Turkey is primarily serving as a drug corridor. Notable previous seizures, including 1.1 tons of cocaine hidden in banana shipments, underscore Turkey’s growing significance in international drug trafficking networks.

Under Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya’s leadership, Turkey has intensified efforts to combat organized crime and drug trafficking. Regular updates on police operations targeting drug traffickers and other criminals are shared on social media platforms. The recent operation, spanning multiple provinces and involving vineyard-based operations for drug processing, underscores Turkey’s commitment to tackling international drug syndicates and safeguarding against the influx of narcotics into Europe.
