DiDi, thanks for writing this. I was racialized as white in a predominately white suburb in Ohio. There is no melanin in my skin. I am now back in Ohio, again in an overwhelmingly white suburb, in an overwhelmingly white county. I have been affiliated with a SURJ group north of where I live. You write:
“I’d suggest focusing on pre-existing white spaces: their homes, their office buildings, their college campuses, their financial institutions, their health care facilities, their shopping centers, and every other space designed exclusively with them in mind.”
You are completely correct about my not feeling safe at pushing back against all the stinking poo whites get away with. And now, after reading your post, I am paralyzed — afraid of saying (writing in an op-ed) the wrong thing, or making it worse for PoC. Not sure how to get over this, or just forge ahead.
When I find a new job, and have automatic deposits, I will be banking at OneUnited.
