Beauty Do or Don’t? Plum Lipstick

The runways are full of bold lips featuring the usual suspects: black, red and orange. But this season, a new colour has been dominating the catwalks: Plum.

It’s very rare that you see a lipstick colour that compliments every skin tone with seemingly equal effect, but the plum lip seems to be doing just that. I’ve personally never dared to try the colour, but have you?

Let’s take a look at the colour on a variety of skin tones- from light to dark.

Fair Skin

Katy Perry proves that plum lipstick won’t overpower your face if your skin is very fair. She opts for a shade called “plumful” that has the perfect amount of gloss to give her the bold lip she wants, yet keep it in balance with the rest of her face so that it remains in harmony with the muted eye make-up she already has on.

Olive skinned women typically have little to no problems when it comes to lipstick, as their medium skin tone tends to go with most anything. Kat Graham is able to wear the daring lip colour and play up her eyes in a more purple shade because her warm skin colour absorbs plum and purple well enough that the overall look comes off as effortless and even day job appropriate. Though she’s rocking the same “plumful” shade that Katy Perry is wearing above, Kat opted for the matte version so that her lip/eye coordination harmonizes well.

Azealia Banks loves plum lipstick so much that she’s set to release her own version through MAC Cosmetics in the near future. Though it is not confirmed, it is rumored that Azealia is wearing Revlon’s “Va Va Violet” to give her full lips a vampy look.

What lipstick brands would you recommend to someone who’s interested in trying the look go to?
