A fan of Broadway musicals, Graham Casson particularly enjoys Les Miserables, which was inspired by Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel of the same name.

Now, Andrew Davies, who wrote the recent War and Peace miniseries, is adapting the novel for a six-part BBC miniseries. Unlike the Broadway version or 2012 film starring Hugh Jackman, the miniseries will not be a musical, but closely follow the novel of nearly 1,500 pages.

Mr. Davies says the musical relates only a fragment of what the book delivers and looks forward to doing the novel “real justice.” Co-producer Harvey Weinstein echoes this sentiment, indicating that the series will be something entirely different while conceding that the musical is one of his favorites.

Distribution of the six-part miniseries will be handled by BBC Worldwide and, in China and America, Weinstein Television.
