Silent Conversations Speak Volumes

From the Field

At a recent retreat in New Orleans, the writers of Eureka Math discussed what distinguishes Eureka from other math curricula. Their thoughts? Eureka Math is consistent and coherent… Eureka Math was written as a collaboration between mathematicians and teachers… Eureka Math maintains a balance of rigor… Eureka Math is intentional and deliberate.

After the writers’ brainstorm, Director of Mathematics Jill Diniz took some of these central ideas and wrote them on large chart paper to display throughout the room. The writers then filled out the charts with their own ideas on each topic. This exercise, known to us as a “Silent Conversation,” ensures an equality of voice among our diverse team of PK-12 educators.

We’ve recreated one “Silent Conversation” below. You can join in the conversation by commenting on Facebook with your own ideas as to why it’s so important that Eureka Math was written as a collaboration between mathematicians and teachers.
