Cyber Padawan Training

GreenRoots187’s simple cyber guide will start us on our adventure towards becoming a cyber wizard=1337!

Disclaimer: I’m not paid for any of the following links.

I prefer a wonka-vader style learning approach=modular learning.

There are 3 broad cyber learning categories i.e. personal computers’=terminals=end users hardware and software, networked=middleware=glue computers’ hardware and software, and applications like web design. We usually start with personal terminal hardware then software with CompTIA’s A+ certification=cert. Next, we graduate to the networking glue=internetworking with CompTIA’s Net+ cert. Beginner web design certifications focus on page layout, use of graphics, HTML, use of browsers and style sheets; CIW Associate covers foundation web design.

Cyber padawans are referred to as cyber apprentice technicians=techs. After 6–18 months of on-the-job training as a cyber apprentice tech then the cyber apprentice graduates to a cyber journey tech. After another 1–4 years the cyber journey tech graduates to cyber craft engineer; a craft engineer is novice teacher. Cyber craft engineers may or may not eventually become Master Cyber Engineers; it’s a long winding road to Master and many of us prefer to stay under the radar, so a cyber craft engineer is plenty.

Beginning cyber certs include CompTIA A+, CIWA, and CompTIA Net+. Journey cyber certs include CompTIA Sec+ and ComTIA Linux+. Crafts engineers begin specialising in various cyber fields to include bioinformatics, SQL database manipulation, VMWare’s cloud management and automation, VMWare’s virtualization, and Big Data Analyttics. Master Engineer certs include VMWare Architect and Redhat Certified Engineer (RHCE). From cyber padawan to Master Cyber Jedi=1337 takes roughly 10–15 years of daily practice, learning curves vary by an individual’s motivation and curiosity.

The older I get the better I was~not me…I retired a craft engineer, too lazy to become a Master Cyber Jedi. However, I am a 1337 in other fields. ;)

My fav cyber learning fun=exploration=cyber adventure is database exploration via the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). The NCBI’s Medical Subject Headings MeSH search function will allow bioinformaticians and scientists alike to narrow our searches to biology-tastic specifics.

Certified Ethical Hacking (CEH)

There’s no such as ethical hacking. We live in a continuum where the right side is dark grey and the evil side of the force is the bad status quo governments and MNCs, aka light grey=white=death.

Fortunately, the cyber industry is mostly immune from the bad status quo practice of university education as a pre-requisite for gaining upper 5 or lower 6 figure paying gigs. Hiring human resource cyber management cares more about the open source projects prospective applicants collaborations. For example, Apache’s OpenOffice, Mozilla FireFox, and Linux are all good ‘foot in the door’ open source collaborations to impress employers.

However, the cyber industry is slowly adapting to the bad status quo requirement of a 4 yr bachelor’s degree vs experience, especially for management level positions. For example, my best mate is a Master Cyber Engineer; DLA hired him via subcontractor General Dynamics, a USA govt defense contractor, wouldn’t promote him to manager until he finished his University of Phoenix shitty bachelor’s degree. Everyone knows the University of Phoenix degree programs are a joke, but the USA govt subscribes to bad status quo norms. Thus, The Erv, had to get a cupcake bachelor’s degree to get promoted from Master Cyber Engineer to manager, a backasswards move.

fun fact: bad status quo govt’s require university level bachelor’s degrees and higher for white collar jobs because it’s part of the obedient, debt slave education model. Multi-National Corporations (MNCs) set the rules and the govt’s et all follow the hidden secrets. It’s also know as the ‘Good Ol Boy=nepotism’ network of debt slavery.

Here’s an independent cyber bachelor learning program from University of the People (UoPEOPLE). For crafts engineers looking for a cyber management position then checkout UoPeople’s Bachelors in Computer Science. UoPEOPLE online programs are an excellent value for motivated independent students.

UoPEOPLE is supported by the Gates Foundation among others. UoPEOPLE offers a pay per exam model, $100 per exam, and is otherwise tuition-free.
The major drawback of UoPEOPLE’s DETC accreditation is regionally accredited USA universities will not accept transfer credits. USA states will also not allow UoPEOPLE graduates to obtain state licensure. Fortunately (for now), the cyber industry isn’t handcuffed by state licensure taxation.

If a cyber student is highly motivated then they could finish UoPEOPLE’sbasic Computer Science bachelors degree at a low cost of $4k in 2 years.

1337s=Master Engineers

As a 1337, the world is at your beck and call! 1337s command good pay. For example, my mates typically earn 6 figures in USD. Journey padawans with basic certifications and a few years of experience especially military experience usually start around $25/hour. If you’re lucky enough to score a foreign USA military government contract then salaries are typically tax free up to USD$98k per year. 1337s are awesome!

Do whitelists not blacklists in software management. For example, when validating an image extension, don’t check for the invalid types but check for the valid types, excluding all the rest. In PHP however you also have an infinite number of open source validation libraries to make your job easier.~Marketplace

Every Earthling regardless of age should learn computer, Internet, and network security basics. These simple cyber skills are important for ID theft prevention, family safety, and general business security. Locking our cyber doors and limiting access to each room should deter nefarious clowns from targeting us and move on to an easier ignorant target.

Use your knowledge for productivity and making the world a more efficient and healthier place. I’m privy to bioinformatics and genomics analysis.
