Ikea’s New $500 Sit & Stand Desk is a Game Changer

TL/DR — Ikea launches awesome electronic sit & stand desks for under $500. Links at bottom.

A month ago my team and I were shopping around for furniture for our new office. We were really committed to having sit and stand desks but really didn’t want to spend $1500 — $2000.

Our furniture shopping took us to Ikea in search of couches and other office accessories and then we struck gold.

The awesome Ikea rep working the office furniture section let us know they had just received their brand new $489 sit and stand desks. They weren’t on the site or even assembled yet but if we came back in a week we could try them out.

A week later 12 new desks were ordered.

Ikea vs UpDesk

Today was the first day in our new space and full day using the new desks. In comparison to the UpDesk, we have at home, the Ikea version has a slightly thinner top, no LCD display for height, and no adjustable presets. But for $400 less I think we’ll live.

The Ikea desk goes up and down smoothly and feels very stable. I probably wouldn’t stand on it but it holds my macbook, two 30" displays and me leaning against it very securely.

The awesome handyman we found on Thumbtack assembled them for us and he said is was quick and easy — especially compared to some of the other Ikea furniture we purchased. I would guess each desk took him about 30 minutes.

All in all we are very pleased.

We saved thousands of dollars without sacrificing our commitment to have a healthy and productive environment.

Good luck keeping these in stock Ikea.

Update 2/26:

The desks were not available for a few months do to some recalls with certifications. Ikea resolved the issues and the desks are available again.
