There have been multiple studies on the future of inter-system space travel that disagree. Cheaper, faster and safer moon trips make it possible to consider building spacecraft on the moon that are more suitable to exploring our solar system than if construction were done on Earth. Does the technology currently exist to mine the raw materials from the moon and build such craft? Nope. But if we want to reach for the stars we need to climb the first step the ladder, which could quite well the one that is our pockmarked neighbor.
