Who saves us?

Why do we make it out to seem like we all need saving?

The larger society desires that person, image or icon. The one who uplifts or the one who brings us out of darkness whereas in truth we have largely overcome adversity and turmoil by our own sheer will.

We want to keep on harping on about a messiah when in reality hundreds of them have come and gone but our real saviours have always been each other.

I hear people talk about angels and supernatural encounters for bad and good. I’m not here to offer explanations that will cause you to question your faith. But where’s the faith in Basra, Aleppo, Bama, or Agatu?

We talk of saviours and messages but here at home we can’t get a supernatural corruption czar? We’ve all become followers of our own desires; wealth, recognition and power in the midst of impending squalor.

Do we not learn from our holy books the essence of community and planning with foresight? Have we forgotten the story of the talents the Lord gave to his 3 servants? Have we become so lost?

Faith will not feed us when our oil becomes worthless. Faith will not save us when all our doctors have either fled or are not competent enough to treat us. Faith will not secure us when hunger causes man to turn on his brother in order to steal.

We are our own saviours and no one else. The notion that one man can lead us to a preferred future is the lie historians prefer to tell….

The truth, when truly sought reveals the work that many chose to do. Hand to the plow, toiling in the face of adversity and mockery, the truth and answer is found in the blood, sweat and conviction of the many.

We are our own saviours.
